In January 2010, Washington County and the City of Newport officially identified the 11-acre former Knox Lumber site near the Interstate 494 and Highway 61 interchange as the location for the Newport Transit Station. Washington County is in the process of acquiring the site from the current property owner. The former lumberyard site gives commuters throughout south Washington County and eastern Dakota County easy access to the proposed transit station.

The transit station planning process, which includes public participation and feedback, will begin in 2010. A final report on station concepts and designs is expected to be completed by the summer of 2011. Construction of this transit station is expected to begin in 2012 and be operational by 2013.
